A flash flood watch on Friday prompted authorities to order the evacuation of more than 1,000 residents still living near the site of a mud slide that killed dozens of people last week.

Scores of other families living in other neighborhoods near the hill that collapsed Oct. 7 were also told to evacuate their homes. The flood watch, issued by the National Weather Service, halted efforts to locate bodies buried at the site of the disaster, which engulfed 275 homes under tons of mud and rocks. Forty-one bodies have been recovered so far, but scores of other people are missing and presumed dead.
