A 37-year-old Pico Rivera man who was serving a sentence for drunk driving was killed Saturday morning at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station when a 1,500-pound steel gate he was closing malfunctioned and fell on him, Deputy Steve Fitzsimmons said.

David Alviso, who was serving his sentence as a trusty at the Valencia station, was pronounced dead at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital about 1 a.m., Fitzsimmons said.

Alviso suffered massive head injuries when the station’s rear metal sliding gate slipped off its track and crushed him, Fitzsimmons said.
