Seven people were hurt and 18 arrested during a brawl Saturday night between soccer fans of two West German teams, police in Gelsenkirchen, West Germany, said Sunday.
The seven injured all were hospitalized, among them a policeman who was hit in the head with a rock.
The fighting broke out during a game between Schalke 04 and Borussia Moenchengladbach at the Gelsenkirchen Park Stadium. The game was part of the second round of the National Soccer Cup.
Most of those involved in the free-for-all were youths, police said. Eight of those arrested were charged with causing bodily harm.
Police said they confiscated a gas pistol, two knives and a number of bottles and cans that apparently were intended to be used as weapons in the fighting.
Schalke, which is Gelsenkirchen’s team, won the game, 3-1.
