Amdahl is expected to unveil the Apache, its version of IBM’s latest generation of mainframe computers. The machine is expected to be more powerful but about 20% cheaper than IBM’s new 3090 series, which is just now being shipped in large numbers. Amdahl, which is 49.5% owned by Japan’s Fujitsu Ltd., hopes to increase its shrinking share of the U.S. market for mainframes, the powerful machines that are the heart of computing systems in large companies and other institutions.
