Westminster : Alcohol Sale Restricted at Station Mini-Marts
The Westminster City Council on Tuesday joined the ranks of Orange County cities that restrict the sale of alcohol at gasoline station mini-marts.
The council approved an ordinance that allows gas stations to sell alcohol, but requires them to meet standards which limit its advertising and display in the stores, City Manager Chris Christiansen said.
The ordinance requires a gas station mini-mart to be at least 1,200 square feet in size and limits the display of alcohol to 25% of the store’s floor space. It bans external advertising of alcohol and amusement devices such as video games from the stations. It also prohibits selling alcohol at drive-through windows or at the pump cashier booths.
The ordinance lifts a five-month moratorium in the city on the construction of gasoline station mini-marts that sell alcohol, he said. Fountain Valley, Newport Beach, Orange, San Juan Capistrano and Seal Beach have banned the sale of alcohol at gas stations.
