Memorial Slated for George Wheaton

A memorial service is scheduled Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena for George Wheaton, former board chairman of the Dillingham Corp.

Wheaton, a fourth generation Californian, was 80 when he died Friday at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto.

Born in Oakland, Wheaton was a great-grandson of William R. Wheaton who came to San Francisco in 1849 and helped found the Vigilance Committee.

Wheaton graduated from the Thacher School (and was a recent chairman of their board of trustees) and Stanford University before working for several Bay Area chemical companies. He moved to Southern California to co-found the Eston Chemical Co., selling that firm to American Potash & Chemical Co., where he became a vice president.

He moved to Honolulu to work for Dillingham, a diversified company dealing in construction, shipping and agriculture. He retired as Dillingham’s chairman and then went on to become president of Hawaiian Flour Mills.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; two sons; five grandchildren; a sister and brother.
