Time Capsules Serve a Valuable Purpose
Since Harvey didn’t mention it, I’m afraid another time capsule may be forgotten. According to my yellowed, 33-year-old copy of The Times, the April 10, 1952 edition plus 100 other microfilmed documents were entombed on that date atop the Pershing Square Garage.
With Mayor Fletcher Bowron presiding, actress Virginia Mayo attending, and in the presence of 500 civic, cultural and entertainment figures, the cubic-foot capsule was encased in 30 tons of concrete at the base of a statue of a World War I soldier, and would not be opened until AD 2052.
On Page 3 of the Women’s Section of that encapsulated newspaper is my engagement announcement photo. Gosh, I hope we haven’t lost this one too!
