Salii Sworn In as Second President of Republic of Palau
Lazarus Salii was sworn in Friday as the second president of the Republic of Palau to fill the unexpired term of assassinated President Haruo I. Remeliik.
In his inaugural address to thousands of islanders and dignitaries from throughout the Pacific who gathered in a field, Salii spoke in favor of establishing a new political relationship with the United States.
Salii was elected Aug. 28 to serve out the remaining term of Remeliik, who was killed by an unknown gunman June 30.
Palau has been administered by the United States under a U.N. mandate as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands since 1947.
