Teachers’ Jobs <i> Aren’t</i> Easier Than Others’

The letter about teachers is typical of the unfounded claims hurled against teachers and public employees.

My wife, an elementary school teacher, devoted her “fringe benefits time” last weekend by spending four hours on Saturday in her classroom and seven hours on Sunday at home preparing lessons, grading papers and planning for an open-house program for the coming Tuesday night. Classes end at 2:30 p.m. each day, but it is rare when she leaves for home before 5 p.m.

None of this is reflected as overtime pay on her paycheck. Nor is the average $50 to $100 a month that she spends on books and teaching aids to augment courses of study.

The only minus in the educational system is that it taught the likes of Mr. Lowell to read and write.
