After reading articles on jury tampering in the Hedgecock trial, we’re convinced that the “embarrassment to this city”--if the city in fact is embarrassed--lies in the persecution, rather than prosecution, of Mayor Hedgecock. Everyone seems to agree that Roger Hedgecock has been a good mayor. He has never been accused of abuse or misuse of office.

As soon as Roger Hedgecock won election to office, his enemies went into action stripping the mayoral position of appointive power to key committees. In spite of the petty and not-so-petty efforts, Mayor Hedgecock went on to build a coalition of support to accomplish major projects to advance the interests of all San Diego for years to come.

The extraordinary effort to microscopically examine the Hedgecock campaign, and the incredible expenditure of public funds to accomplish this, would lead us to believe the district attorney’s office had misplaced priorities. Now reports of jury tampering! Conspiracy? Not on the part of Roger Hedgecock! Then the polls--resign or stay--and all the expressions of concern for the city. What about the rights of a man whose record of public service has been outstanding in the eyes of the voters who consistently elected him to office? This is a man’s life, his career, his future, and the future of his family.

In the last year and a half, the mayor has performed his duties heroically. He deserves our consideration and our support. We still have only accusations of guilt, not proof. Apparently there has not been a fair trial for Roger Hedgecock. The mayor is the victim. What about his rights? Resign? NO!!!
