Q: On a recent TV show, the hostess urged women to raid men’s closets. I thought the androgynous look was out. Is it?--P.M. A: Although fashion has moved on to a more feminine look, certain menswear items--blazers, shirts, trousers, vests--have become classics for both sexes. The only thing that’s out now is a head-to-toe men’s look, complete with fedora and three-eyelet tie oxfords.

One of the latest expressions of unisex is the buffalo-plaid shirt. The one illustrated here is made of a cotton flannel that’s been brushed three times on the outside and twice on the inside, to make it soft all over. It’s available for $28 in the current catalogue published by The Gap, P.O. Box 60, San Francisco 94066. In addition to the traditional red-and-black plaid, it comes in bright blue, clear green and brilliant yellow.

Q: How much do new jeans shrink?--C.L. A: Most jeans makers say the inseam length will shrink about an inch after laundering. For proper fit, choose jeans that feel comfortable, but don’t buy a size larger to compensate for shrinkage. And jeans washed inside out stay dark longer.
