Anaheim : Driver Killed When Car Veers Off Freeway

A 19-year-old Los Angeles driver was killed Sunday morning when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel and his car plunged off the Santa Ana Freeway and crashed in Anaheim, the California Highway Patrol said.

The identity of the young man was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

CHP Officer Dan Lyons, who investigated the accident, said the driver was alone in the vehicle and was killed instantly when his 1975 Ford Mustang veered off the freeway and struck a tree just north of the Ball Road off-ramp at about 8 a.m., Lyons said.

“The vehicle was southbound on I-5 and in all probability he fell asleep,” Lyons said. “There were no signs of skid marks or braking where the car drifted off to the right and went off the road.” Lyons said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
