Escondido
Palomar Memorial Hospital in Escondido will become a designated county trauma center, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday.
The board’s 5-to-0 vote ratifies a decision made earlier this month by the Department of Health Services. Palomar had been a provisional trauma center, and its contract was due to expire Thursday.
The hospital joins UC San Diego Medical Center and Mercy, Scripps Memorial, Sharp Memorial and Childrens’ hospitals in the network of trauma centers.
The trauma centers receive severely injured patients in specially staffed and equipped emergency rooms, even if conventional emergency rooms are closer to the scene of an accident.
