Douglas-Home, 48, Editor of Times of London, Dies

LONDON — Charles Douglas-Home, editor of The Times of London, died Tuesday, ending a fight with cancer that had caused him to direct Britain’s most prestigious paper from his hospital bed. He was 48.

Douglas-Home, nephew of former Conservative Prime Minister Sir Alec Douglas-Home, became editor in 1982 after publisher Rupert Murdoch fired Harold Evans in a management wrangle.

Born into one of Scotland’s leading aristocratic families, Douglas-Home began his career in journalism in 1960 as a general reporter on the Scottish Daily Express in Glasgow and moved to the Daily Express in London a year later, remaining there until he went to The Times in 1965.
