Malibu : Board Seeks Reimbursements

Share

The Board of Education of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District has asked the state Department of Education to reimburse the district for attendance money lost when the district was forced to close two Malibu schools during this month’s brush fires.

Schools receive state money based on the number of students in school each day and the school district stands to lose several thousand dollars because of the closure of Webster Elementary School and Malibu Park Junior High School. The schools have a combined attendance of 1,005.

The board also has filled 23 of the 26 positions on a community advisory committee that will help the school district choose a new superintendent.

Supt. George Caldwell has announced that he will retire before June.

Each of seven school board members appoints three members to the committee, while management and employee organizations appointed the remaining five members.
