A 19-year-old Soviet soldier entered the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan on Thursday, leaving Americans there perplexed about what he wants, Administration officials said Friday.

The soldier is one of about 115,000 Soviet troops in Afghanistan helping the Marxist government fight rebels backed by the West and by China.

A Russian-speaking U.S. Embassy official was trying Friday to determine if the young soldier is seeking asylum in the United States, the officials said.

The officials, who asked to remain anonymous, said the Soviet ambassador in Kabul asked to meet the soldier, who was not named.
