‘Bishops and Economics’
It’s very easy for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to condemn the American economy in the name of morality. All they have to do is make it look like they’re concerned about the poor and they can get anything they want.
Their concern for the poor is very misguided though. Religion is supposed to help a man’s soul, not his income. The bishops seem to be concerned only for the poor’s material well-being. Have they forgotten that the material things of this world are the least important? What are their priorities?
It is interesting that their solution for today’s “unacceptable” disparity in wealth is to take from the rich and give to the poor. But, the Church has always taught that stealing is immoral! Nevertheless, now the bishops are saying that it’s OK to steal from the wealthy if you give to those in need. They’re trying to tell us that need justifies theft!
Boy, are they ever off course! I suggest they shelve this project of dabbling in political economy and get back to the business at hand--religion. They need it.
