USC Is Having Trouble With Prep Schools, Too

Share

Sports agent Howard Slusher, whose son John plays tailback for Chadwick’s eight-man football team, hired the USC band to play Friday for the game with Flintridge Prep.

Chadwick won the game, 28-7, but lost the halftime. After the USC band performed at intermission, the Flintridge Prep bagpipers took the field and stopped the show.

They played, “When Irish Eyes are Smiling.”

Add Slusher: One of his clients is Chicago Bears defensive back Todd Bell, who still hasn’t signed. Bell, a Pro Bowler, must be wondering if he hasn’t overplayed his hand, since the Bears are 8-0 without him.

Slusher is known for advising clients to sit out for a full season, but he claims it’s always their decision.

He told Will McDonough of College & Pro Newsweekly Football: “When they come to me, I explain the options. I ask them to tell me what they think they should get paid, and what they will accept. We generally put down on paper five options. From the low side to the high side. Some players say they will take nothing but the best, will not play unless they get it.”

Add Bears: In the Southwest, they have gone William (The Refrigerator) Perry one better.

In Texas Arlington’s 27-13 win over Northeast Louisiana, it used 280-pound nose guard Tracy Baysinger and 290-pound tackle Greg (Truck) Roberson in the backfield to clear the way for fullback Tony Brown on a fourth-and-one conversion.

Texas Arlington Coach Chuck Curtis told the Dallas Morning News: “We stole it from the Bears, and I really like it. We call it our Double-Refrigerator crew. Both doors open, and you can get what you need.”
