WFC Roundup : Calcagno Strong-Arms Santa Clara to 53-30 Win on 429 Yards Passing

Quarterback Greg Calcagno, completed 21 of 25 passes for 429 yards and six touchdowns to lead UC Santa Clara to a 53-30 victory over San Francisco State in nonconference football action Saturday.

Santa Clara ran up a total of 751 yards on offense. Fullback Matt Shaw rushed for 184 yards on 25 carries. Calcagno had three interceptions among his four incompletions.

At one point in the second quarter, San Francisco pulled to within three points at 17-14 with nine minutes left after quarterback Rich Strasser threw one of his two scoring passes.

But by halftime, Santa Clara led 32-14 after a pair of Calcagno strikes.

Santa Clara is 7-1 on the year. San Francisco dropped to 3-4.

Sacramento State 28, Cal Poly SLO 27--Senior cornerback Mark Albert batted down a two-point conversion attempt with 20 seconds left to preserve the victory at Sacramento.

Sacramento quarterback Greg Knapp came off the bench to throw two touchdown passes to James Ferguson, and freshman running back Don Hair rushed for 143 yards to fuel the Hornets attack. Sacramento upped its record to 6-2 overall, 2-1 in conference. Cal Poly SLO fell to 3-5 overall, 1-2 in conference.
