The Food and Agriculture Organization reported a dramatic improvement in African harvests but urged international action to tackle a long-term food shortage on the continent. Edouard Saouma, director general of the U.N. agency, said 1985 main crops will set records in many parts of Africa hit by drought. For 16 of the 21 drought-afflicted countries, the emergency is over, he said. But he added that those countries will still need to import more than 3 million tons of food in the coming year.
