The space shuttle Challenger suffered minimal wear and tear during its latest space mission, with only 18 heat-resistant tiles damaged on re-entry, the lowest number ever, officials said Thursday.

The orbiter, which landed Wednesday morning, was being prepared for return to Kennedy Space Center in Florida at dawn Sunday, said National Aeronautics and Space Administration spokeswoman Leslie Neihouse.
