Naval divers saved 15 miners by swimming 1,082 feet along a flooded shaft deep under north China but seven other mine workers died, the Guangming Daily reported Friday.

It said the divers began their search along dark tunnels 2,950 feet underground after the Jicheng mine in Shanxi province flooded on Oct. 25. They found the 15 survivors on the seventh day and brought chocolate, grape juice and letters of encouragement.

The water was finally pumped out allowing the trapped workers to emerge just after midnight on last Tuesday, after 11 days underground, the official newspaper said.
