Three American Indian organizations issued a joint communique pledging “absolute support” for the struggle of the Miskito, Sumu and Rama Indians of Nicaragua. The communique by the Survival of American Indians Assn., the American Indian Movement and the International Indian Treaty Council pledges “material goods, monies, communications support, and, if necessary, our bodies in aid and resistance.” It was issued in Los Angeles by American Indian Movement leader Russell Means and Survival of American Indians Assn. national director Hank Adams. Among the alleged oppression Means pointed to was the relocation of the Indians by the Sandinistas and the jailing in 1981 of Indian leaders, who have since been released.
