United Brands reported a $3.4-million profit in its second quarter, reversing a loss a year earlier. The company, which produces and markets food products such as Chiquita bananas and John Morrell meats, said its revenue for the quarter ended Sept. 30. declined to $718.3 million from $764.2 million in 1984. United Brands said earnings from its banana growing operations improved in the quarter, primarily because of cost cutting in production and shipping.
