Terry Waite, personal representative of the Archbishop of Canterbury, said in Beirut that he has made contact with the Islamic kidnapers who are holding at least four American hostages. However, he warned that if anything goes wrong, the Americans could be killed. He did not identify the kidnapers, believed to be members of the extremist Islamic Jihad (Islamic Holy War), who are demanding the release of 17 comrades jailed in Kuwait for bombings there.
