Arab Emirates to Have Ties With Soviet Union
The United Arab Emirates and the Soviet Union have decided to establish diplomatic relations this month, Abu Dhabi Radio reported Friday, quoting a Foreign Ministry statement.
A mission of businessmen from here left for Moscow on Thursday to develop economic ties and seek joint ventures.
Diplomatic sources said the Sept. 26 announcement by neighboring Oman that it would exchange ambassadors with Moscow, and a measure of disenchantment with U.S. policies in the Middle East, prompted the pro-Western United Arab Emirates to consider the move. Another pro-Western country in the region, Kuwait, has had full relations with the Soviet Union for a number of years.
