Ex-ASU AD Interviews Today for SDSU Job : Next Week: Devine, Hoffman and Rinehart

Fred Miller, former athletic director at Arizona State, will interview today for the athletic director’s job at San Diego State.

Among those whose interviews have been confirmed for next week are Dan Devine, director of Arizona State’s Sun Angel Foundation; Randy Hoffman, Maryland’s associate athletic director; and Bob Rinehart, SDSU’s acting athletic director.

Miller, 54, is currently a health studies and physical education instructor at Arizona State. He was the school’s athletic director from 1971 to 1980.

“I think Fred would be good for San Diego State,” Devine said. “He’s done a good job here. He has a good track record.”

Devine, 60, has coached football teams for Arizona State, Missouri, Notre Dame and the Green Bay Packers. In his current job, he supervises Arizona State’s major athletic support group.

Devine said Friday he was originally contacted by SDSU’s search committee.

“In the words of my wife, I normally don’t do this,” Devine said regarding next week’s interview. “I’m not looking for a job. We’re going to have what I would term exploratory talks. My connections are very close with the California State university system. The chancellor of the system is a close family friend. People in the system are very high on San Diego becoming a good college town as well as a good pro town.”

Hoffman, 34, originates from College Park, Md., where he has been the No. 1 assistant of Maryland Athletic Director Dick Dull for the past three years. Dull said he is endorsing Hoffman for the job.

“He understands big-time college football and basketball programs,” Dull said. “We’ve been very successful historically here. Plus, I hear ticket sales are down in San Diego. Randy has the experience to help them with that.”

Hoffman said he will leave Maryland on Monday for his interview at San Diego.

Rinehart, 53, replaced Mary Alice Hill, former athletic director, after she was fired in August. Rinehart did not apply for the permanent position until Oct. 31, the last day applications were accepted.

Ron Fowler, chairman of the search committee, said there are “9 to 11 candidates at this stage.” Fowler said interviews will continue through next Saturday.

Gale Sayers, former Chicago Bears’ star and an athletic director at Tennessee State, had expressed interest in the SDSU job but has not been contacted by the school and therefore is not expected to interview for the position.
