The editorial (Oct. 28) on the “fence-mending” meeting of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi of India with President Zia ul-Haq of Pakistan failed to note the most encouraging news of all.

Prime Minister Gandhi hosted a meeting on nuclear disarmament in New Delhi on Jan. 28, 1985,. The participants were Raul Alfonsin, president of Argentina, Andreas Papandreou, prime minister of Greece, Miguel de la Madrid, president of Mexico, Olof Palme, prime minister of Sweden, and Julius Nyerere, president of Tanzania.

These six world leaders issued a joint appeal to the five nuclear weapon states calling to end the threat of nuclear war, as well as to the people of the world to support this end.

The Delhi Declaration of the Five Continent Peace Initiative is an eloquent document and is deserving of all our support. It reminds us that, “For centuries, men and women have fought for their rights and freedoms. We now face the greatest struggle of all--for the right to live, for ourselves and for future generations.”

Perhaps the Five Continent Peace Initiative will be the Nobel Peace laureate for 1986.
