Need for Speed Limit on Autobahns Disputed
A speed limit on West Germany’s autobahns would be widely ignored and do little to reduce air pollution, according to a report released Monday.
The Federation of Technical Supervisory Societies said only three of 10 drivers obeyed the law when a speed limit of 100 kilometers an hour (62.5 m.p.h.) was posted on 20 stretches of the superhighway system during a 10-month survey of exhaust emissions.
The test was ordered by the government, which has been under strong pressure to reduce car fumes and other pollution.
