PEKING — The oldest Roman Catholic church in Shanghai, completed in 1853, has reopened after being closed for almost 20 years, the New China News Agency reported Monday.
It said more than 1,000 people attended a high Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church on Sunday given by Louis Zhang Jiashu, 93, a member of the Patriotic Catholic Church set up by the government in the 1950s and not recognized by the Vatican.
The church building was damaged during the Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976. It was repaired last year at a cost of $47,000.
