GENEVA — A woman shouting “U.S. out of Nicaragua!” hurled a roll of toilet paper at Secretary of State George P. Shultz today, missing him by about 10 feet.
Shultz had just walked into the lobby of the Intercontinental Hotel when the woman, who was standing on a balcony one floor above, started yelling and then threw the roll in Shultz’s direction.
It fell about 10 feet from the secretary, who did not look at her and continued moving through the room.
The woman, who appeared to be in her mid-30s, was taken away by Swiss police.
The hotel houses the majority of the White House press corps. At the time of the incident, it was crowded with reporters waiting for a briefing on the U.S.-Soviet summit conference.
Security measures at the hotel are considered stringent, and officials say they check everyone entering the building to see if they are a guest or an accredited journalist.
