Inglewood : Billboard Task Force

Share

In a preliminary move to tighten billboard regulations, Mayor Ed Vincent has appointed Councilman Virgel Benson to head a task force to study the use and placement of billboards throughout the city.

The task force will make recommendations to the council on a proposed ordinance that would increase the minimum distance between billboards. Under the proposal, billboard companies could not place advertisements within 500 feet of any other billboard. The current ordinance prohibits companies from placing billboards within 500 feet of another billboard on the same street--allowing companies to place more than one billboard at an intersection as long as the advertisements face different streets.

Council members said two-sided billboards may be an alternative to having multiple signs at busy intersections.

Representatives from the Foster and Kleiser and Gannett Outdoor billboard companies said they would not object to two-sided signs.

The task force, which will include planning commission members, representatives from billboard companies and concerned citizens, is expected to file a report in early 1986.
