Nearly $2.3 million was stolen from the safe of Borchert Co., a Hamburg cash-transport firm, police said.

The theft was one of the biggest in Hamburg’s history. A police official said Tuesday the money was taken from the central safe of the firm’s headquarters in the Hamburg suburb of Niendorf. He said the safe had not been broken into, and could be opened with a key that was kept in an envelope in the building.

The firm collects proceeds from local businesses and delivers them to banks. Large sums sometimes are kept in the company’s safe when the banks are closed, police said.
