Japan’s Bullet Train Bookings Up Sharply

TOKYO — More people are traveling on the the Japan National Railways bullet train since 520 people were killed last August in a Japan Air Lines Boeing 747 crash, the world’s worst single-plane disaster.
Figures released by the government-owned railway show that first-class bookings on its Shinkansen bullet trains jumped sharply after the jet crashed on a domestic flight between Tokyo and Osaka. The two cities are linked by the high-speed trains.
Bookings on one line were 48% higher in September than a year earlier. Another line showed a 31% rise.
Shinkansen trains normally run at speeds up to 150 miles per hour.
