Druze and Shia militias called a cease-fire to end four days of savage street fighting for control of West Beirut that left at least 52 people dead and 225 wounded. The cease-fire, the sixth declared since the fighting began Wednesday, includes a four-point agreement calling for the withdrawal of all militiamen from the streets, the immediate release of scores of kidnaped civilians, reopening of all roads and formation of a joint task force to enforce security. The fighting has stalled efforts by Anglican envoy Terry Waite to negotiate the release of Americans held hostage by Muslim extremists.
