Congratulations on your excellent article on Iceland Poppy culture ( Oct. 27 ). I have a suggestion for plants in four-inch pots: Buy a large sack of potting mix, mix it half and half with garden soil and put your plants in that. It is good for all plants in four-inch pots because they come planted in potting mix and can’t make the transition into even sandy garden soil. I have gardened in this area for 25 years and have taught container gardening at South Coast Botanic Garden. I was unhappy for years with the results of planting from four-inch pots in the garden. At first I thought it was my fault, but I found that potting mix was the answer.
