Regan Remarks About Women

Share

You did a hatchet job on Regan in your editorial.

I have been a feminist for lo, 50 years, and I am certainly no Regan-phile, but may I point out that in that same edition of The Times, you gave the ladies 79 inches of space to 60 for President Reagan and Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev? And with this kind of reporting: “Mrs. Gorbachev arrived first in the same fur-trimmed gray coat she had worn when she arrived in Geneva three days ago. Although Mrs. Gorbachev was criticized by the French fashion press for wearing the same outfits twice on a visit to Paris last month, she seemed to be thumbing her nose at them by doing it again here.”

You simply confirm Regan’s statement that “most women--believe me, your readers for the most part, if you took a poll--would rather read the human interest stuff of what happened.”

Incidentally, do you honestly believe ALL men understand missile throw weights?

Regan, I am sure, regrets making the statement. I can accept the President’s explanation. He should perhaps counsel his chief of staff, however, to heed the words of that old, old song, “Keep a smile on yo face and keep yo big mouth shut.”
