Regan Remarks About Women

Regan’s remark about American women upset me terribly. I don’t think his statement was simply a momentary lapse that reveals one chauvinist’s sensibility or lack thereof. I think instead it reflects something much more dangerous--this Administration’s deep-seated contempt for women and its refusal to look at the realities of American life.

Today, more than ever before, American women are financially responsible for their families’ welfare--at 70 cents on the dollar, mind you. At the same time, more and more old women are literally abandoned to the streets--poor, sick, and afraid. Are these the women Regan would entertain with fashion shows?

Most polls show nuclear disarmament to be the No. 1 priority for most women. Are these the women Regan would entertain with fashion shows?

How many examples do we need of this Administration’s attitude toward human rights when such messages as Regan’s speak so eloquently?
