Journalists in the state-controlled media Monday staged two three-hour work stoppages throughout Greece to protest a government decision to abolish daily briefings for reporters.

The stoppages, at noon and late evening, were called by the Union of Greek Journalists in an emergency meeting Sunday night.

The union called on Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou to reverse his decision last Friday to end regular briefings by the government spokesman for political correspondents, a practice followed since democracy was restored to Greece in 1974.

The union said it does not accept the government’s offer of written statements with briefings when “deemed necessary.”
