Chewing Gum

Share

It’s well established in the theater that when a playwright or director wishes a character to appear very unsophisticated and even gross and cheap that character commonly chews gum.

One never sees Helen Hayes, Jackie Onassis or even a U.S. senator chewing gum. They and anyone desiring to create the best possible image and impression of themselves stay far away from that vulgar looking practice.

If that is the case why do we see more and more persons chewing gum? Either they don’t know of the instant assault on their image that gum chewing produces or they don’t care.
