Westlake Candidate Won’t Seek Recount

A Westlake Village City Council candidate who came within 10 votes this month of unseating Councilman Irwin Shane said Wednesday that he will not seek a ballot recount.

Anthony Plaia said Shane’s margin of victory did not change in a final Los Angeles County vote tally issued this week. Because of that, Plaia said, there is little chance that a recount would turn up enough votes to unseat Shane, who is now mayor.

Plaia announced after the Nov. 5 election that he would decide whether to ask for a recount after the final tally. Final results released Monday showed that Plaia and Shane each picked up 24 votes.

In the preliminary count, Plaia received 777 votes to Shane’s 786. The final returns showed Plaia with 801 votes to Shane’s 810. Incumbent council members Bonnie Klove and Franklin Pelletier received 957 and 942 votes, respectively, a county elections spokeswoman said.

Shane, Klove and Pelletier will be sworn in at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 31844 Village Center Road, Westlake Village City Manager James Emmons said. At that time, council members will elect a mayor from their ranks.
