Gandhi Accepts Hanoi Award for His Mother

Rajiv Gandhi, the first Indian prime minister to visit Hanoi in three decades, Wednesday accepted Vietnam’s highest civilian award--presented posthumously to his mother--and reaffirmed support for Vietnam.

Gandhi, pushing for expanded economic ties on a one-day visit, was given a rousing welcome by thousands of people who lined his motorcade route waving miniature Vietnamese and Indian flags.

He received the Gold Star Order on behalf of his slain mother, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who he said had regarded the late Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh, as her uncle, reports from the Vietnamese capital said.
