Sharing Memories of the L.A. River
As Roraback searches for the source of the Los Angeles River, we feel compelled to share with him our own expedition of last year. We are the explorers who went before him but without an avenue of public notice. Call us Tom (Lewis) Lambert and Bob (Clark) Denny.
Since we didn’t need to build a case or momentum for any readers, we went straight to the outlying uplands with the help of local maps and began inquiring of the natives in the vicinity of where we thought the source would be. We found a similar level of knowledge about it as did Roraback. Even the natives who lived next door to the confluence, the beginning of the L.A. River as it is called, were scarcely aware of the significance of their location.
(We found) the river beginning in Canoga Park and explored its feeder creeks--Calabasas, Bell Canyon and Chatsworth, which feeds Bell. . . . We also later explored the highlands of Dominguez Channel, where it disappears into Hollywood Park race track, and Ballona Creek, where it disappears under Venice Boulevard.
