Proposals for community projects that would improve the standard of life of low-income rural residents are being sought by the San Diego County Department of Housing and Community Development.

A community development block grant, totaling nearly $2 million, has been earmarked by the Board of Supervisors for improvements in rural areas. Areas that would qualify for funds include Jacumba, Boulevard, Tecate, Campo, Potrero, Dulzura, Descanso, Pine Valley, Guatay, Mount Laguna, Cuyamaca, Palomar Mountain, Lake Wohlford, Ocotillo Wells, Julian, Santa Ysabel, Ranchita and Warner Springs.

The federally funded grant is directed at improving the living conditions of low- and moderate-income persons through decent housing, suitable living environment and expanded economic opportunities. Types of projects include street and sidewalk improvements, senior-citizen centers, recreational parks and facilities, drainage systems, community centers, solid waste facilities, economic development activities and child care centers.

Proposals must be submitted by Jan. 6 to the county Department of Housing and Community Development, 7917 Ostrow St., San Diego, CA 92111.
