MIAMI —
Seven tropical storm systems killed 146 people, caused $4.45 billion in damages and chased a million people from their homes, making the 1985 hurricane season, which ended Saturday, the worst in 69 years.
Six hurricanes and one tropical storm came ashore in the United States during the Atlantic-Caribbean hurricane season, which began June 1. That is the greatest number since 1916, the National Hurricane Center reported.
The storms claimed 36 lives in the United States, 100 in Puerto Rico and 10 in Cuba.
