Q : I’ve heard that it’s unnecessary to consult a veterinary ophthalmologist about a pet’s cataract surgery until both of its eyes look like dense white marbles. Is this true? -- J.L .
A: If you or your veterinarian suspect cataracts, it’s best to go ahead and get a diagnosis. Once cataracts are “mature,” the ophthalmologist can’t see the structures behind the opaque lenses to make sure that no other ocular problems are present. With other disease present, cataract surgery might not be appropriate.
