An automotive safety group criticized the government’s preliminary investigation into millions of General Motors Corp. cars that may experience sudden acceleration when shifted out of “park.” The private Center for Auto Safety said in a letter to Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Hanford Dole that the department is improperly focusing attention on driver errors that might cause the problem, rather than pressing to find a safety-related defect in the cars.
