Sen. Chiles Has Quadruple Heart Bypass Surgery
Sen. Lawton Chiles (D-Fla.) underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery to correct blocked arteries today and doctors reported he came through the nearly four-hour operation in excellent condition.
A Lakeland Regional Medical Center spokeswoman said the surgery began at 8:23 a.m. and Chiles, 55, came out of the operating room at 12:15 p.m.
A triple bypass operation had been planned, but once the operation was under way, doctors discovered that the quadruple operation was necessary.
Doctors said Chiles should be able to return to work within two weeks.
