The same court that on Monday acquitted Gen. Fabian C. Ver today sentenced a mailman to 16 years in prison for failing to deliver two letters, the official Philippine News Agency said.

The sentence for mailman Lucio Dolpo was handed down by the Ombudsman’s Court that acquitted the armed forces chief of staff and 25 other defendants in the 1983 assassination of opposition leader Benigno S. Aquino Jr. The news agency said Dolpo was also fined the equivalent of $53 and barred from public office for 32 years.

In his decision, Justice Amante Q. Alconsel said Dolpo’s offense was serious because “it alienates the confidence of the public in a government service which is of great necessity in social life.”
