Olympic cyclist Rory O’Reilly of Santa Barbara returned from the 11,000 foot altitude of La Paz, Bolivia, with two world speed records--the first ever for an American male rider.

O’Reilly set marks for 500 and 1,000 meters with a flying start. He clocked 26.993 seconds in the 500 to better the 27.310 by Gordon Singleton of Canada, set in Mexico City in 1980, and 58.510 in the 1,000 to break the 59.509 standard set by Shaun Wallace of Great Britain earlier this year at Colorado Springs.
